Prior to our acquisition, this property served as transitional housing for persons with disabilities. In early 2012, the NGO that ran the home known as Simon House closed its doors forever. In October of 2013, the home was acquired by Motor City Blight Busters Detroit Inc. with the goal of creating housing and programs for United States Veterans. Unfortunately, in the year between vacancy and donation, the home was “scrapped” and all heating, cooling and plumbing fixtures were removed from the property.
The vision for Veteran’s Village Center is to restore this multi-unit property to its former glory, including an expanded lot to include a neighboring property acquired by the Blight Busters. This center will serve as home to programs aimed at returning vets as well as members of the community who have served their country as well as transitional housing. Our neighboring project, Farm City Detroit, will provide the veterans opportunities to work in their community in a therapeutic environment.
Our development plan includes complete renovation of the property reconfiguring the space for new use. Additionally, the Veteran’s Village Center proposal includes demolition of neighboring blighted property (recently acquired by MCBB) as well as the expansion of the yard, extension of the security fencing and installation of a vegetable garden to provide a sustainable supplementary food source.
We have successfully forged new partnerships with community and national veteran’s organizations and the interest in occupancy has been overwhelming. The wheels are already in motion to complete all of the necessary Federal approvals and licenses.
How Can You Help?
We are currently looking for financial help to leverage our initial capital (courtesy of a MSHDA grant) to begin construction on the property while additional funding sources are secured for program development. Our immediate 2014 goals are:
- Stabilizing the facility to prevent further damage
- Hiring an experienced grant writer to expedite the paperwork process
- Procuring the development package required for the Veteran’s Administration including architectural and engineering drawings plus final construction costs
